On the 19th of October, 2015, I turned 25 years old! It has not been easy but I thank God. Below are my lessons so far:
- You don't need any serious relationship as a guy in any Nigerian university: I had a girl friend while in school. I spent so much trying to impress her. I took care of her with the very little I made. Where is she now? She is gone! She loved me but she must get married na! Small issue came up and she broke up with me. She once told me that she would have stayed if I was ready for marriage and she would have tolerated even me cheating if I was ready for marriage. I didn't cheat o. Our issue was religious based: after she finished watching that linda video of hell in 2013, she broke up with me fully in 2014 immediately after our graduation from university. Having a babe in school is waste of money and distraction. Nigeria is hard especially when you're not from a wealthy home. Save your money and be focused.
- Get a skill while in School: to survive in the current Nigerian economy, undergraduates should always get a skill and master such skill. Forget white collar job: if you're lucky to get one, fine but if it doesn't come, use your skill and take care of your self.
- Save money: don't be like me who was spending my money trying to impress my girl friend. I bought her a lot and she never stopped talking about me. I wish I used the money to do something better.
- Start a business during NYSC or while in university: don't return to your parent after service o. It can be worst than being jobless. Staying without them will surely push and stress you into surviving and getting something for your self.
- To become an employee is rubbish: I officially and fully graduated in 2014 though it was to be in 2013 but the long ASUU strike affected us. I completed my service July this year and I was 'lucky' enough to get a job two months later. My people, the job is nonsense o! My pay is not worth the work. My time and life are controlled. I work to make other people rich and richer. The truth is: I'm not happy working here. I'm far better than my current pay. This is a job thousand applied for but I know I'm worth more than the stupid pay. Working for your federal government is still better than working for all these foreigners in this country. To be your own boss is just the best. Life is too short to spend greater paart of your entire life working for someone while your personal time and love life suffer.
- Connection is power: I graduated with second class upper from one of the best federal government universities in Nigeria: if you interact with me, you will know I'm very intelligent but I'm struggling to secure a deserving job except my current annoying job. Some persons are busy securing high paying jobs in my own very eyes. No matter how intelligent, brilliant and charismatic you are, connection is super. If the super influential people don't know you, it will be hard (pls, not impossible) to get you out there for others to see you. Make the right connection while in university. Mix with influential people in Uni, go out, hang out, meet people, build network. You will need it after school.
- Listen more than you talk please. This will help you study your environment and the people around you. My next point will make you understand me better.
- Never ever underestimate anyone: during my training for my new annoying job, there was a girl with us who didn't interact much in class. I was known, praised and honoured because of my charismatic prowess. I underestimated the girl and communicated more with others who spoke like me during training. I was shocked when I heard that the lady left the job few weeks after the training as she got a job with federal govt through her uncle in Abuja. Her pay and work conditions are far better than mine. While in school, most of the students who were embarrassed because they were not serious with academic related works are making really cool cash now. Never ever underestimate anyone.
- Be industrious: while in school and during service, Youtube was my friend: I learned web design using CMS, blogging, graphics design and fiverr. I held tutorials on these skills and got paid too. I designed blogs and websites for small churches, students and individuals. Fiverr saved me during service and it's still saving me now o. Most of the guys who completed service with me went broke after service and they kept begging for money. Be industrious to save your esteem after school and NYSC.
- Never be ashamed to ask for help: beg when you should beg.
- If you'e not from such a well connected home, ensure you study highly demanded and useful course in university and learn it well. Don't just rush out from house and choose any how course all because you want to go to the university: hunger go far you o after service except you're the very business oriented type of person.
I thank God for 25 years so far.
